Shaun’s CFS/ME recovery: the hidden dangers of toxins and infections

Shaun’s story: from debilitated to determined:

My journey through CFS/ME and what I’ve learned

Having suffered from ME/CFS for a decade, I, like many others, learned my fair share along the way. Not satisfied with the advice to “just live with it,” I began a journey to understand why a previously healthy person like me became so debilitated. Most doctors responded with confusion or disbelief, but my search for answers eventually led me to uncover the role of mycotoxins in ME/CFS recovery—a hidden factor that changed everything.

For years, I tried everything and consumed all the information I could about fatigue and energy. My mission was to get my life back and shift the odds in my favour. Eventually, I found the right resources and experienced a complete mindset shift. That shift put me on the road to recovery. Here are some of the key lessons I learned—and what I wish I had known from the start.

Approach healing with a plan

As a young man desperate to feel well again, I tried everything at once. I threw the kitchen sink at recovery. I pinned my hopes on therapies like acupuncture, Qigong, emotional freedom technique, and bioresonance medicine. But I didn’t really understand what was wrong with my system in the first place.

Instead of the scattergun approach I used in my first eight years, I now recommend identifying your personal root causes. In my case, it was heavy metals, mould, and chronic infections. No amount of cupping, hypnotherapy, or osteopathy could truly address those. Testing your body and home for triggers can help you create a personalised treatment plan. That’s more effective than relying on trial and error. Healing from ME/CFS is rarely quick, but progress is possible when you’re on the right path. Addressing the true causes consistently is what brings results.

Take a holistic and comprehensive approach

My 12-week framework (described in my online program below) uses a systems-based model. It covers:

  1. Nutrient deficiencies
  2. Sleep
  3. Detox and toxicity
  4. Infections
  5. Gut health
  6. Diet & hydration
  7. Mitochondrial function
  8. Circadian rhythm
  9. Hormone balance
  10. Stress & emotional well-being
  11. Hormetic stress

This setup is deliberately comprehensive. It targets the interconnected systems affected in ME/CFS. Each of these pillars played a role in my recovery, although to different degrees. For me, toxins and infections moved the needle. Heavy metals (especially mercury and lead), mould (from water-damaged buildings), and chronic sinus and dental infections all overloaded my immune system.

Heavy metals are everywhere in our environment and damage our mitochondria—the energy producers in our cells. Mycotoxins ME/CFS recovery is a concept that’s not often talked about, but it was central to my healing. Mycotoxins from mould impaired my energy production, caused neurological symptoms, and weakened my immune system—all common in ME/CFS.

In my case, chronic sinus infections caused brain fog and low energy. I was diagnosed with MARCoNS, an antibiotic-resistant staph linked to mould exposure and immune suppression. Dental issues, like simple infections and jaw cavitations, also contributed and needed treatment.

I identified these root causes through advanced testing. Then I followed a carefully designed detox and targeted antimicrobial protocol.
Cellular detox, in my view, is one of the most powerful tools to restore mitochondrial and immune function. Healing requires peeling back the layers—like an onion. Restoring balance is a step-by-step process, but it’s one that works. If mould is part of your health picture, don’t overlook mycotoxins ME/CFS recovery as a key element of your plan.

Respect the nervous system and human biology

Fatigue isn’t caused only by biochemical imbalances. I also focus on evolutionary biology and nervous system regulation. Recovery depends on respecting human physiology—honouring circadian rhythms, improving vagal tone, reducing stress, and integrating mind-body practices. These tools restore balance to the entire system. In combination with detoxification, they form the backbone of my mycotoxins ME/CFS recovery approach.

Support, purpose, community, and persistence

During recovery, having a sense of purpose and community makes a difference. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t. Surround yourself with people who support you without judgment.

Having someone by your side who understands this illness can be crucial. A guide can help you stay on track and make progress faster. Today, I support people around the world as they uncover their root causes and walk their path to healing. With the right approach, the body can begin to heal and regenerate. Sometimes, it just needs the right support to do so.
